Virginia has played North Carolina more times than any other team. The 316th all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and Tar Heels will be the first matchup between these two rivals in the NCAA Tournament. In the most recent series, then-No. 15 UVA took two out of three games over then-No. 10 UNC in Charlottesville on the first weekend of April. Virginia took game one in a 14-11 shootout that saw freshman Henry Ford become the first Cavalier to hit three home runs in a single game since Dan Street in 2002. In game two, which featured the exact pitching matchup we will see in Friday’s College World Series game, Evan Blanco won the battle with UNC’s Jason DeCaro, giving up jus two earned runs on six hits and striking out seven batters in 6.1 innings of work, leading the Cavaliers to a series-clinching 7-2 victory. North Carolina avoided the sweep by scoring six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away for a 12-7 win in game three.
Both teams have emphasized that the early April series in Charlottesville bears little significance for this single-game rematch on the biggest stage in college baseball more than two months later. Both teams have improved drastically since then, with the Tar Heels winning four of their last five ACC series and securing the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and the Cavaliers winning four out of their last six series and earning the No.12 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. UNC opened the Chapel Hill Regional with strong wins over LIU and defending-champions LSU before suffering an 8-4 loss to the Tigers to force the winner-take-all game 7. That final game was a thriller, with the Tar Heels winning 4-3 in 10 innings to advance to the Super Regionals. Hosting West Virginia in the Supers, North Carolina took game one 8-6 on a walk-off home run from Vance Honeycutt and then outlasted the Mountaineers in a 2-1 pitchers’ duel to send the Heels back to the College World Series for the first time since 2018 and 12th time in program history. Virginia, meanwhile, is back in Omaha for the third time in the last four years and seventh time in program history after going 5-0 through the NCAA Tournament so far. While the vaunted UVA bats, which still rank top five in the country in many offensive categories, have been the strength of the team all season long, it was the resurgent Virginia pitching staff which has fueled the Wahoos to the College World Series. After averaging nearly 10 runs per game this season, UVA won the Charlottesville Regional with final scores of 4-2 over Penn, 5-4 over Mississippi State, and 9-2 over Mississippi State again, with that final victory coming on the shoulders of an incredible performance by Jay Woolfolk. In the Super Regional, the Cavaliers used a combination of continued elite pitching and timely two-out hitting to post 7-4 and 10-4 victories over Kansas State to punch their latest ticket to the College World Series.

When is game 5 of the world series
The Dodgers lead the series 3-1 and even with Tuesday’s win and some momentum, New York has a long road ahead. No team has ever won the World Series after losing the first three games. Still, the Yankees took Game 4 with a dominant, hard-swinging win, and the World Series odds have tightened (a little).
The Dodgers navigated through October with a three-man rotation after Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, Gavin Stone and Emmet Sheehan all suffered season-ending injuries, but they used an array of bullpen games to continually advance. Throughout the summer, the likes of Betts, Max Muncy, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen all missed extended time, yet the Dodgers finished with a major-league-best 98 wins. On the night they won their second consecutive World Series game, Shohei Ohtani suffered a subluxation on his left shoulder, yet the Dodgers found a way to win two more.
Perhaps no player embodied that better than Freeman, who sprained his right ankle on the night the Dodgers clinched their 11th division title in 12 years and spent all month fighting through hours of treatment just to step on the field.
Game world series 1986 6
“When I was with the Cardinals, he was someone on the Mets we admired and respected, because even when the Mets were lousy, even when they were 20 games out, he was playing his ass off,” Hernandez said. “And I’ve said this for over 30 years and will say it again: If anybody else on our team had hit that ball to Buckner, I believe we would have gone to extra innings, and who knows what happens? But it was Mookie, and he busted it out of the blocks. And I will always believe that he put the pressure on Bill Buckner because of his hustle. It looked like a routine ball when he hit it. But he made it something else. But that was who he was.”
Of all the injustices served to Bill Buckner, a silver lining of the ’86 error was that he and @MookieWilsonNY1 became lifetime friends and confidantes. Learn more in our Episode 33 about Buckner’s life #Mets #RedSox #MLB
The New York Mets finished the regular season with a franchise-best record of 108–54, winning the National League East division by 21+1⁄2 games over the division rival Philadelphia Phillies. They then won a tightly contested 1986 National League Championship Series against the Houston Astros, 4 games to 2, clinching the series with a 7–6, 16-inning win in Game 6. On July 19, Mets’ infielder Tim Teufel and pitchers Rick Aguilera, Bobby Ojeda, and Ron Darling were arrested after fighting with policemen outside a bar in Houston. Just three days later, the Mets played a game in Cincinnati that saw Ray Knight, Darryl Strawberry, and Kevin Mitchell get ejected, forcing starting catcher Gary Carter to play third base and the Mets to play a pitcher in the outfield, with lefty Jesse Orosco and right-hander Roger McDowell alternating between the pitcher’s mound and the outfield as needed. Despite the adversity, the Mets won the game, 6–3 in 14 innings, on a three-run homer by Howard Johnson.
It was initially said that Clemens was removed from the game due to a blister forming on one of his fingers, but both he and McNamara dispute this. Clemens said to Bob Costas on an MLB Network program concerning the 1986 postseason that McNamara decided to pull him despite Clemens wanting to pitch. McNamara said to Costas that Clemens «begged out» of the game. Regardless of who was really telling the truth, the Red Sox had been warming up closer Calvin Schiraldi in the prior innings and, with him ready, McNamara brought him in to pitch the eighth.
In the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode «Mister Softee», Bill Buckner appears as a guest star and mocks his famous 1986 mishap by missing a crucial catch of a Mookie Wilson-signed baseball. As the episode concludes, he redeems himself by catching a baby thrown from a burning building.
