The ball took Rizzo just far enough from the bag that he could not complete the play himself. As Betts sprinted and touched the base with his left foot, Cole was frozen on the infield, failing to cover first in an inexplicable blunder. The Dodgers scored a run and still had the bases loaded. The rest is history: a Freddie Freeman single that scored two, then a Teoscar Hernández double that brought home two more and tied the game.

Podres pitched two complete games against the Yankees, allowing three runs (two earned) in Game 3 and then returning in Game 7 with an eight-hit shutout. Gil Hodges drove in the only two runs of the Dodgers’ Game 7 win, but Podres went home with the hardware.

“We’ve been through this many times this year,” said Braves manager Brian Snitker, “losing key components to our club. I mean, really key components. We’re going to continue. It’s not going to be an excuse or anything else. We’re going to go out and continue to try and win games.”
Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty bounced back beautifully from a rough start his last time out. He did not let Juan Soto or Aaron Judge beat him. But then Giancarlo Stanton did. In the sixth, Flaherty spun an inside curveball below the zone, and Stanton smoked it to left field for a go-ahead, two-run home run. It was Stanton’s sixth homer this postseason. Crucially, the Yankees left the bases loaded that inning, with lefty Anthony Banda striking out Alex Verdugo.
The Dodgers tied the game in the 8th inning, sparked by a double and some heads-up base-running from superstar Shohei Ohtani, who advanced to third base on a Yankees error. Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts plated Ohtani with a sacrifice fly.
Freddie Freeman hits a two-out grand slam to give Los Angeles Game 1. Remember, Freeman had been hampered by his sprained ankle all postseason long. It appears the rest period between the NLCS and World Series did him some well — not only on his triple earlier in the contest, but now this:
