The 2024 Dodgers saw a number of starting pitchers suffer season-ending injuries. On the night they clinched a division title, Freddie Freeman sprained his ankle. On the night they took a 2-0 lead in this World Series, Shohei Ohtani slightly dislocated his shoulder. They needed to stage a bullpen game to save their season against the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series and required a walk-off, Kirk Gibson-style grand slam from Freeman to win the opening game of this World Series. You could see it coming. Aaron Judge drew a walk and squared up a ball in Game 3. He walked, singled, and reached base three times in Game 4. The at-bats were starting to get better and more competitive. On Jack Flaherty’s tenth pitch in Game 5, Judge sent a loud two-run home run into the right-field seats, giving the Yankees an early 2-0 lead.
Both situations caused the 35-year-old to miss multiple games, but neither would stray him too far from his end goal. The Dodgers will fly back to the West Coast touting the Commissioner’s Trophy after defeating their biggest rivals on the biggest stage in baseball.
But the Yankees did have their ace, Gerrit Cole, on the mound for Game 5 coming off his six-inning, one-run start back in Game 1. And while the Dodgers felt good about having their own No. 1 starter, Jack Flaherty, pitching, the pregame onus was on them to make adjustments at the plate.
We all are at a tavern on St. Marks Place in Manhattan. Dodgers fans line the curb outside, infuriating passing Yankees fans, who really can’t say anything because the Yankees are at this moment down 2-0 in the World Series to the Dodgers and currently losing 4-0 in Game 3, which (spoiler alert!) they will go on to lose.
This, as president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman had declared time and again, was supposed to be a “golden era of Dodgers baseball,” a generation of organizational excellence unmatched in the storied, but often tortured, history of the century-old franchise.
Game 1 world series
It was reminiscent of Kirk Gibson’s stunning homer that lifted Los Angeles over the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series at Dodger Stadium — one of the most famous swings in baseball lore.
In the franchise’s first playoff game since 2011, the Phillies had just a 3.4 percent chance of winning Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Cardinals with one out in the ninth, but they stormed back with a six-run inning. In their lowest moments, they had a 17.3 percent chance of winning Game 4 of the NLCS and a 21.4 percent chance of winning Game 5 of the NLCS — both of which turned out to be victories.
Cortes made sense as lefty counter to the left-handed hitters in Freeman and Ohtani. As a starter, Cortes held lefty batters to a .530 OPS in the regular season. Ohtani was 2-for-12 against him in his career.
“It’s definitely going to be a tough task,” Cortes said. “Obviously we’re talking about one of the best hitters in baseball in that lineup. But I think it’s not uncharted territory for me to face lefties and get them out. I think throughout my whole career I’ve done that pretty well.”
