The sound and music, while minimal, also added a great deal of depth to the world. Even though this was a DOS game, it seemed to use a music system similar to the Amiga’s. Instead of FM midi sound, it made use of digital audio samples. Granted, at the time I played, the PC only had one digital channel available (assuming you had a SoundBlaster), whereas the Amiga had four, and the actual sample quality of the sound was low, it was still much nicer than other games of the era.
This game is notable, not only for its dramatic storytelling and early Survival Horror roots, but also for being one of the most Nintendo Hard games to come down the pike since Battletoads. The slightest misstep meant death in any number of horribly unspeakable ways. The console versions of the game — such as the SNES port — were made more difficult than the MS-DOS / Apple Macintosh versions (which themselves were more difficult than the original Amiga version), reportedly to give players «more value for their money.» (Although it may give some players a strong desire to throw their keyboard/joypad at their TV.)
The first version was the Amiga, which was the birthplace of game. This version is the most unpolished with few checkpoints and stiffer controls. An Atari ST port would soon follow which was near identical, with lower quality graphics and sound being the biggest difference maker. The one thing that sets the Atari ST port apart from the others is during the beginning of the game, as Lester swings on a vine to avoid the monster, he can be heard yelling in fear. This was omitted from all later versions of the game. Seeing room for improvements, Chahi would oversee the port of Another World onto Macintosh and DOS, while letting the port coding duties go to Alan Pavlish and Bill Dugan for the Mac version and Daniel Morais porting Pavlish’s work over to DOS. These home computer versions differ significantly in some areas. New sections were added to certain levels, more hazards in the maze air ducts and better enemy placements along with more checkpoints. Between them, the Macintosh version has higher quality graphics than its DOS counterpart.

To say the game was innovative was an understatement. Chahi himself wrote a polygon routine that would allow the graphics to be composed of vector outlines — which would take up less space than normal sprite graphics. Chahi also used video recordings of his own brother to create rotoscoped animations for the project. The result was an epic, cinematic masterpiece which told a story without the use of dialogue, voice work or screen text, and with cutscenes that led from one part of the story to the next. Controlling the player character was done via two buttons, with the player character performing a wide variety of different tasks depending on his location, speed, and movement.

On the Game of Thrones map, Oldtown is shown at the southern tip of the continent, with its towering Citadel being the focal point of learning and knowledge. The Citadel houses the Maesters, scholars who serve the ruling houses of Westeros with their wisdom and knowledge.
Also known as the Great Grass Sea, the Dothraki Sea is the largest semi-continuous region in Essos. Largely made up of prairie land, it occupies a huge area of inland Essos, stretching for thousands of miles in every direction and bordered by the Free Cities to the west and the Red Waste to the east. Because the Dothraki who control the area are nomadic, there aren’t any permanent settlements, save for Vaes Dothrak, a city on the north-eastern edge of the region.
