That brought up star slugger Shohei Ohtani, a left-handed hitter. Yankees manager Aaron Boone went to his bullpen again for Cortes, a lefty starter who hadn’t pitched since Sept. https://arnobbd.com/ 18 because of an elbow injury.
While the final score may not indicate it, Friday’s World Series contest began as a pitcher’s duel. Both the Dodgers and Yankees sent their strongest postseason starters, Jack Flaherty and Gerrit Cole, to the mound, and each turned in a solid performance. Through four innings, both teams remained scoreless.
Giancarlo Stanton launched a two-run homer for New York in this much-hyped, star-studded matchup between two of baseball’s most storied and successful franchises — the third straight World Series opener to go extra innings.
World series 5 game highlights

This was, instead, the key to a whole lotta shaky nerves in Los Angles tonight. Aaron Judge cracked a two-run homer in the first inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. went back-to-back, and then the Yankees added on two more soon after. Jack Flaherty only got four outs. This was not the script! But with a lineup as relentless as the Dodgers’, and with the generosity of the Yankees defense in the fifth inning, a comeback was in the cards in Game 5.
Energy at Yankees stadium definitely deflated a bit after the top of the fifth inning. But hope is still alive with a couple of guys here just saying, “we got a game” as we all wait for the Yankees to take their next at bat.
Koufax punched out 15 and held the Yankees to two runs in a Game 1 complete game. Then, with the Dodgers up three games to none in the series (sound familiar?), Koufax again went the distance, striking out eight over nine innings of one-run ball to sweep the Yanks.
9:52 p.m. — Cole walks Muncy as his cinematic night slowly spatters out in front of his eyes, and Boone takes a visit. The pitcher responds, as Kiké grounds into a force out to Volpe who gets Muncy at second. The Yankees nightmare inning ends with the score back even and 4.5 frames to go.

David Freese became the sixth player in history to earn League Championship Series and World Series MVP awards in the same postseason. Freese also won the Babe Ruth Award as the postseason MVP. In Game 7 of the World Series, Freese hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning, bringing his 2011 postseason RBI total to 21, an MLB record.
Texas once again took a two-run lead in the 10th on Hamilton’s home run, and after manufacturing a run to cut the deficit in half, St. Louis was again one out away from defeat. But Lance Berkman laced a game-tying single to center, making the Cardinals the first team in World Series history to come back from two different two-run deficits in the ninth inning or later. There would be no deficit in the 11th, however, as Freese — the eventual Series MVP — blasted a walk-off home run to center field off Mark Lowe to force a Game 7.
Starters C. J. Wilson and Chris Carpenter faced off again. Wilson walked two batters, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman, in the second inning and both came in to score, aided in part by an error by David Murphy. However, despite the Rangers walking nine batters in the game (including Albert Pujols three times intentionally), the Cardinals did not score again, leaving 12 runners on base. Mitch Moreland hit a home run in the third, and Adrián Beltré hit one in the sixth, to tie the score at 2–2.
I’m from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where the Texas Rangers reign. My fondest baseball memory is getting tickets to the World Series for my parents in 2010 and 2011 and watching fans like my mother — Rest In Peace — love every second of it. I know what it meant to the community to just be in the Fall Classic. It meant everything. The first time the Rangers were one strike away from winning the World Series I remember tweeting something like, “Wake up your kids, Rangers fans, your favorite team is about to make history. You are going to be World Series champs!” I eventually deleted it.
