Civ IV designer Soren Johnson took an axe to some long-standing ideas about strategy with Offworld Trading Company, and his Mohawk Games is still swinging with its next game, Old World, which you’ll see for the next few months endlessly (and unavoidably) described as “Civilization meets Crusader Kings.” https://taoxoan.info/casino-review/comic-play/
In Old World you don’t play a faction, you play a person with a name and a family, and just like Crusader Kings you go from there, having kids, making friends, forming relationships and guiding the fates of everyone around you. When you die, you start playing as your heir, and so on and so on until the game ends.
In Old World, diplomacy and imperial management is driven by people, and when you talk to them you get to see direct results. Wars, friendships, alliances, marriage proposals, trade deals, secret missions, there are much more immediate consequences from your conversations in Old World than we’d get from a Paradox game, making it feel so much more like you’re shaping an entire empire not just through buildings, but through relationships.
On your way to the end, you can shape your society with some interesting and flavorful choices of laws and religious beliefs. Legal innovations are unlocked by technology and present a binary choice between two paths, such as Slavery vs Freedom or Monotheism vs Polytheism. Having a professional army will give a trickle of training points at all times, for instance, while a volunteer army will give you a larger number per turn while at war but none while at peace. In most cases, both choices are simple, compelling, and seem to do a pretty good job of simulating the historical ideas they are meant to represent.

If the timer deck runs out or more than three hunters have fainted, the players will lose the quest and have to start again. If the players can defeat a four-star monster before the campaign timer runs out, they win the campaign.

These are drawn in a number designated by the attack cards you’ve played. It sounds more complicated than it is in practice, and once you reach the combat phase it’s tense, exciting, and fast-paced, requiring careful resource management and the occasional massive risk to defeat the target. It’s helped by the board artwork really setting the scene and the miniatures themselves, which are highly detailed and representative. Incidentally, the Wildspire Wastes expansion adds several monsters for the Wastes, and four additional Hunters which can be used in the Ancient Forest set.

World series game 1
The first Series with a pair of 50-home run hitters in Judge (58) and Ohtani (54) opened quietly as Gerrit Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner, and Jack Flaherty dueled through four scoreless innings. Judge struck out swinging in his first three at-bats before hitting a single off Brusdar Graterol with two outs in the seventh.
With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Gavin Lux drew a walk, meaning only a double play would prevent Shohei Ohtani from coming to the plate as the winning run. Yankees pitcher Jake Cousins got his groundball, but Oswaldo Cabrera at second — in for Torres — had to dive for the grounder and misplayed it. Everyone was safe and two runners were on for Ohtani.
If this wasn’t the greatest Game 1 in World Series, perhaps it was another hobbled player right here in Dodger Stadium hitting a walk-off homer. Yep, this one definitely felt at least a little reminiscent of Kirk Gibson’s legendary game-winning home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series for the Dodgers against the A’s.
The Yankees then brought in Nestor Cortes, who hadn’t yet pitched in the playoffs due to injury. He got Ohtani to foul out on an incredible play by left fielder Alex Verdugo, who fell into the netting. It was a big deal, because him falling into the net allowed the runners to move up to second and third. With a lefty on the mound, Mookie Betts coming to the plate and lefty-swinging/hobbled Freeman coming to the plate, it seemed like an easy decision to walk Betts.
