When Buehler struck out Verdugo to end the game, the Dodgers poured onto the field to celebrate between the mound and first base, capping a season in which they led the big leagues with 98 wins. With several thousand Dodgers fans remaining in a mostly empty stadium, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred presented the trophy on a platform quickly erected over second base.
Who wins the world series game today
By overcoming a five-run deficit against one of the best pitchers on the planet. By using seven relievers — one of them Buehler, a starter making his first relief appearance in six years — to record 23 outs. By scratching and clawing and using every aspect of the roster to solidify a title that seemed inevitable in January and felt impossible at the start of October.
It’s a group that has withstood disappointment throughout the year, but one that has been building toward this moment for a number of seasons. Betts became the first piece of the puzzle after being acquired from the Red Sox in 2020. Freeman joined him as a free agent two years later. Now with Ohtani in the mix, the Dodgers are set up to contend for multiple championships.
What the Dodgers didn’t know, though, was the adversity this group would have to face along the way. In the end, it’s a group that will best be known for their resiliency, one that overshadowed even their immense talent.
An inning later, Buehler started to get loose. In the bottom of the eighth, when Treinen, in his third inning of work, faced a two-on, one-out jam, Buehler was warming up alongside Daniel Hudson, the 37-year-old right-hander who had already pitched in back-to-back games. When Treinen got out of it, inducing a popup of Stanton and a strikeout of Rizzo, it set the stage for Buehler to get the most unlikely of ninth innings imaginable. His teammates felt confident.

College world series game 3
One of the keys to Sunday’s game was always going to be what A&M did if its opener and Cortez weren’t able to combine for at least seven innings. Aschenbeck threw 46 pitches over 2.2 innings Saturday night, meaning he was only available on a more limited role Sunday.
I don’t think there are many D1 teams that have the kind of deep bullpen that we have. Is that why the LSU coach is leaving his starters in for so long? I don’t know if that’s the case but I do know that is the case at a lot of D1 schools.
March Madness may have popularized the Cinderella run, but Fresno State’s magical championship in 2008 went down in history with the best college underdog stories. Fresno outlasted Georgia 19-10 in an outrageous Game 2 before taking Game 3, setting the record for most losses by a national champion (31) by refusing to quit when it mattered most.
When Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam to save the Dodgers, who were trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night, he was a hero to all Dodgers fans, including 10-year-old Zachary.
